MILAN TOWNSHIP

The Milan Township Board and Planning Commission have been working on a Large Scale Solar Energy Project Ordinance. Now is the time to educate yourself on the realities of living with large commercial solar fields and their impact on our community. Make your voice heard before it is too late.

Who is C.A.S.A.?

C.A.S.A. or Citizens Against Solar in Agriculture, is a group of Milan Township residents that have serious concerns about large solar projects being zoned in Ag1 and Ag2 on Milan Township land. We are NOT anti-solar. We are for RESPONSIBLE solar.

You can see from the township map below, just how much land would be made available to solar projects. Green and light green are Ag(Agriculture). If our zoning is not clearly defined and limiting for this type of use, we cannot control the number of projects and/or acres that could become commercial solar fields. We believe the most prudent location for large scale commercial solar projects is in Industrial zoned land which is also designated by the color grey and dark grey on the map below.

This is not agricultural activity!

Why are we concerned about Commercial Solar Fields in Ag?

  • Consumption of Agricultural land with no locally enforceable limits sets us up for perpetual phases and projects. This means that solar fields can potentially overrun our community and completely change the character of where and how we live.

  • Residential property values are proven to decrease if there are commercial solar fields in the area.

  • Solar Project taxes will NOT contribute to the operating budget of our schools which means none of the money goes toward instruction or programming.

  • Quality of life is diminished by loss of green space, humming noise from the panel inverters, and wind noise from the sound of wind hitting the panels. Listen and view here. Fencing and lack of green space diminishes habitat for wildlife. Wooded areas on Agricultural Lands can be clearcut for this kind of use.

  • The solar power generated by this project will NOT decrease any household's energy bill. It will not improve our grid reliability, but, instead, be sold to an energy company.
